Unit 8 describes how the translation efficiency of the fibre properties to the final application (i.e. a composite material) should be maximised and the importance to choosing the appropriate structure for the application. The use of straight, non-crimp continuous filament yarns with very low twist for the reinforcement is stressed as an important requirement. These have to be placed in 2D and 3D assemblies to form preforms and other technical textiles. The effect of yarn crimp on the stress-strain curve of woven and braded structures is discussed. DOS warp knitting based technology is the most used technology, as it lays straight yarns in various directions, as required for the application.
