Unit 10 deals with nonwoven structures, as these were not dealt with, in depth, in previous units. They are not suitable for structural applications, namely in aerospace engineering. This is because some nonwoven materials lack sufficient strength unless reinforced by a backing or other means. Their composites display low mechanical properties due to fiber discontinuity and poor structural integrity. We shall consider now the technology of nonwoven fabrics, for technical applications. Web formation and nonwoven fabric formation techniques are discussed. 2D nonwoven structures are reviewed.
