Unit 7 deals with PBO and PBT fibres. Poly (p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) PBO fibres are also know by the trade name Zylon. Polybenzimidazole PBT fibre was commercialized for its thermal stability in 1983 by Celanese. These heterocyclic rigid-rod polymers are made into fibres using the wet (air-gap) spinning process. Due to the high cost of manufacturing PBT, PBO fibres have become more popular. Zylon is a super fiber that features one of the world’s highest levels of strength and modulus of elasticity (resistance to deformation). These properties are highly desirable for sporting equipment of all kinds. PBO is also used in Personal Protective Equipment such as Firefighter Turnout Gear, Heat Resistant Suits and Motorcycle Racing Gear. With a Limiting Oxygen Index of 68 and a decomposition temperature of 650 °C, PBO has very high heat and flame resistance. This unit studies their production, characteristics, structure, properties and applications.
